hello and welcome to a new edition of bella italia! you know, our blog for the masterpieces of the italy theme world. in edition no 9 we showed you how elaborately jens is building the vehicles. here you can see one of his special models. by now we have 8,800 cars in wunderland. we have to build 300 alone for italy because they can't be bought readymade. a big effort! but that's not all! because it has to become a msterpiece
and that's holger's everyday job because he illuminates the vehicles with loving detail. he's been doing it forever since one year after our opening. he's an expert on car illumination. but first let jens show us how this car was built. moin jens! i'm holding one of your little masterpieces and haven't broken it yet.incredible!
please tell us in short what's so special about this one? it's as elaborate as an ambulance vehicle because i had to build it from scratch. it's a typical rome car, dozens of these drive through the city. but you can't buy readymade models so we had to build it ourselves. how long did it take you?
if i do the math i would say with the nine pieces i built, 2.5 to 3 hours a piece. impressive!how long does illumination take? somewhere between 2.5 and 4 hours. this one 2.5 to 3 hours, i would say. that's a lot. hard to imagine that it takes almost a full working day to have this car inside the exhibition and illuminated
and the guests can see how authentic it looks. where will it be placed? or do we decide later? it's a roman car, it will stand in rome. of course, but will it stand with hazard flashers on?or in a parking spot? or in the middle of the road?wait, i prepared something... ...to show you what they can do... here it is with locked wheels it will set its indicators on the left.
that's an italian! you think he will signal before pulling out?of course!!! okay. and the cabin was cast, right? hartmut zacher made the cabin. he's a great model builder. i'm really happy about it. do you have to keep things in mind about the car?do you discuss it beforehand? i always talk to the model builders in advance
because special cars need special light. in this case the rotating beacon will be difficult because the cabin was cast and not machine made. so you take this apart, like i'm unwillingly doing just now? then you place the cable inside... ...it's probably best we watch. and you show us how you do it. tell us how many steps it takes until we see the light. sure.what are you doing?
we have this cabin and i have to drill some holes for the headlights. then a hole for the rotating beacon that's one thing. then we have to hide the wires we'll need this later, with the chassis we definitely need taillights and jens needs flashers. yes.so an indicator led here
and another flashing led for the cabin. a while ago i helped gerrit build cars for the usa theme world. it's really minuscule work to get the wires inside. i accidentally drilled the holes too big. you need a steady hand and looking at holger's small and steady hands... it's even more surprising that your cars turn out so excellent!
thanks! i'll leave you to it, so you can get on with it and will drop by later to check it out. if you have time? i can use help! if you're not done i'll help you.okay! so, i started with this since frederik already started to disassemble it i don't have to do that anymore. but i have to get those leds
... like this one... inside somehow. so i have my little hand drill, the chassis, and will drill holes in it by hand now to stick the wires through. why a hand drill? simple. electric drills are too fast and will break the plastic. i inserted the led,
inserted the wire and will superglue it tight now. then comes the second led and i'll connect the wires. now i have to hide all this so you can' t see it from outside. once this is inside you can't tell from the outside. here's the next led, let's see if it can glow. yes, this will be our taillight. i'll quickly glue it on.
now there are 2 leds in front. the good thing is, the leds we use are so small, you can't see them a meter away. we'll do a little test and realize, wow, they're glowing. this is much too bright though. this is why i have to use a cascade in between to control the intensity of the light. i can determine the resistance
for the light of this led. this looks like a good level for the headlights, for driving light that's at 5.6 kiloohm for the multiplier, i will write that down. all the cars have to shine the same because they are a series. i'll do the same with the taillights. let's see where the positive and negative are.
now i have to turn it a bit take a little tin solder and solder the ends together. now they are wired in series. okay mate,2 hours later, you done yet? ahm... no! it will take as long as it needs to. hopefully italy will be ready by next year. but in order to not have you working all night on this...
shall i help you?yes. what can i do? you can place the taillight wires nicely along here, until here. these wires over here?yes! will do. oh, and i brought you something. here, i need these until tonight. oh, nooo! it's been a while...
let's see, may i steal this?go ahead. hm, first i'll need this tool! you just want this wire placed evenly here? yes! where is your superglue? over here. looking at this fickle work here... how long did you take in total? i can only say in percentage.i think 10%.
well, with the numbers we had earlier?800 - 1.000 pieces? yes. that's something! do you have a favorite car? of all times? or from last year? for the italy theme world? yes, i like the galliano. lamborghini?yes. it used to be a police car.i saw that one. i stole it down here...yes?
the blue and white one?exactly. it cost me a lot of time.you really shouldn't know. tell me!no.a ballpark figure? 16 hours?yeeesss, great! but honestly, 800 to 1,000 cars... why do you like doing it so much? i don't know, maybe the challenge. the more complicated, the better i guess. but this huge pile i brought you,
that's not tempting for you, is it?no!! but you would still do it?yes. because you're the boss! some of them are metal, those are really hard. yes, but that's the challenge i like. everyone says they're hard to do, i don't think so. the ones with detachable lights here?that's for sissies. you can pack them back. we don't need them. it was a joke, a bad joke really.
lucky me... are you always this calm?yes. even with the visitors asking the same questions over and over?yes. oh! i've always had a lot of respect for you! oooh, thanks. can i go home now? why? it's only midnight? oh, help, i know why i'm working at this place here!
how is your cabin? almost ready?yes, i'm on it. these wires together, glue them in here... glue the driver to his seat, direct the wires down... ...out back onto the chassis... yes, chop, chop! i'm done with my wires, look, what do you think? maybe a little more...
that looks great! here, you can finish this now that i helped you you'll be done in no tme at all. i shall return tomorrow to check the results tomorrow night. thanks. i got some of it done yesterday today i will continue with the illumination of the garbage truck. as you can see, there is a rotating beacon
with a wire on it. i managed to put the led inside yesterday. we have these injection moulded parts. we had to take down the rotating beacon which was on here before. it is gone. and i drilled a hole. the led goes through this hole with the beacon. if i can find the hole...
okay, now we have a new rotating beacon with light. this will be more elaborate and time consuming because these wires have to be glued tight, that takes time. this is a simple car, simple because it has very few leds we have 2 taillights one indicator and another indicator,
we have headlights and a rotating beacon on top. that amounts to a bunch of wires sticking out at the bottom. they have to be hidden, that will take another half hour. i try to attach the right colored cables to the resistance the cargo area is attached now. and now i can hide the resistances.
that was hard, but now all wires are hidden, so upon looking at the car you can't see them anymore. and we can color the cables black then you can't see them anymore either. so now, it's ready. we could maybe add some grey varnish to make all of it invisible. and add some red paint to the taillights
so you can tell what they are. oh, noo. i've been standing here half an hour wondering why it took for ever, this wasn't 2 or 3 hours, right? no.how long? more like 6 hours. always the same, ask your people how long it will take they say 2 hours, 3 max. maybe because they really want to do it
and i would say no if it took too long. was there a problem, why it took so long? yes, of course. there is no room in the car, normally i can hide things in there. this time i had to glue it all underneath. the resitances, the cables, that takes time. have you seen it glow yet? yes, you want to see it too?
it makes you forget the time it took to see the beautiful end result.yes, i wanna see! is everything done now? yes, even your taillights! well, those probably won't glow... i've actually tried them already. i'm nervous.no!too i am! here come the headlights... and your taillights.super! now the indicator
i hope i have the right wire come on, flash it a little okay, i'll flash it. it's flashing!looks cool! and the beacon on top of course.yes, super! really cool! speaking of loving detail... you asked me about challenges, ... the lamborghini. i took it back from jens.
can you turn it on?yes. i'll try to shine all the lights. i won't get it to flash though. but we get the idea what it looks like when all lights are on. this was a "normal" model because i had to drill through the metal and it has 2 leds in the back either side.4 lights! tricky! yes, i had to drill through that as well.
i can't wait to see it inside the exhibition all flashing and... that's a sight, seeing a car glow after so much time. those are the best moments i think. it will be even better when it is placed inside rome and we turn off the room light and see it shine... hard to imagine. it's one of those goosebump moments, we hope you will feel the same way about italy.
that's it for today's edition of bella italia, we hope we gave you some good insight. come back next time on youtube or facebook and watch the new edition of bella italia.we're looking foreward to it. until then, all the best!
