i'm hannes ravic from germany and i'm here today with two people from jaunt. we do this virtual reality on theuss harry s. truman the aircraft carrier from the nimitz-class which serves today in the persian gulf. i am captain ryan b. scholl, the commanding officer of the harry s. truman. my job is to make sure that the ship and all its crew were executing our mission from our national directive. can you describe your ship? we are 250 feet wide, we are 1100 feet long.
we do basically three things: have you seen the movie "top gun"? we are a floating air base for the united states navy. there are 75 aircraft on board. we flyabout a hundred sorties a flight per day in the execution of that, we have our ownordinance, we have our own fuel, we have our own supplies, parts and maintainers that maintain the airplanes, that go flying out each and every day so wereally are floating airbase. the second thing that we do is weare a flag ship for our battle group commander. so that as we go into different theaters
wherever they may be, we can plug into a mateur theater like we are here. with our 5th lead headquarters. or we can be an enabling task force thatcomes in to provide american power on scene wherever it's needed and then thelast thing we do is were five star hotel and restaurant for 5,000 sailors thatneed to eat, sleep, do their laundry. take hot showers and all thethings that are required for them just to be able to live every single day andall the computer systems and the internet that have to go on with it within that mission to keep them healthyand happy in contact with home so that
were able to have them work so hardevery single day. where are we, what is this place here? we at the af galley on the uss harry s. truman. this is the veg-craft area. what's job here? here, we prepare the ffb. fresh fruits and vegetable forthe salad bar area. how many kilograms of salad do you produce every day approximately? kilograms i had no idea. but as far as cases, probably anywhere from twelve to fourteen cases here.
how many people work here? all together now say about 15-20.- what's your favorite meals here on board? pizza and wings. they really seem to eat it up. is there a special day youoffer this? is there a menu? it's just a cycle day whenever the day comes around, then we serve it up, at the hot bar right next to thesalad bar. what's your favorite one?
my favorite? penne alfredo. i'm beatamarie reyes, ship servicemen. we are in charge of the services of the ship. the ship store, laundry, barber shop, coffee shop. what do you sell here?- basic things that sailors need. they buy snacks and then if they run out of toiletries they get it from here. how do you do it, how do you escape whenyou sometimes need privacy?
sometimes i would go to on like the the back of the ship and just look at the ocean reminds me of home you know it calms me. do you miss it? of course i do miss it every day. it's so it's hard for me to be away because i'm so used to being around myfamily. i found my own family here. the ship's store people that i work with.
they helped me throughout so you know... now we're standing onthe bridge or what's called the pilothouse of the aircraft carrier and we have several positions up here and this is where some of the crew comes updaily for their watch and stands a certain position to safely navigate and execute the mission of the truman which is a mobile airport. -is it difficult to navigate here? this ship is enormous and the persian
gulf is not that big for my point of view when i look at the map is adifficult to navigate here? it is. there's a lot of challenges out here. anything from water depth, to oil rigs,to the geography of the way the landforms. but i think the biggest challenge out here is the amount of vessels in the confined space. if it was just us it wouldn't be an issueat all there's plenty of room but as you
start adding in fishing dolls and heavy challenging out here sometimes. specially on a day where wehave to drive fast.
