alexa, what is google home? and in a recent vacation, i bought exactly that google home, and the unboxing of it follows right after the intro. with that said, hello and good evening youtube to this short unboxing video of the google home. like alexa said, google home is the smart assistant from google, that you can place in your home and control without a phone just by speaking to it. just like you already know it from the amazon echo. without further ado, let's take a look inside. as we can see, we have a google logo on the top, quite subtle. if we take a closer look on the packaging, we find a picture of the product on the front, on the one side we have a short introduction into the google assistant, what you can do and which voice commands are possible,
on the other side we have more information, in form of a list of supported features, and on the back are a few more information about smart home, the device itself and so on. all in all quite self explaining, and i'd say we now take a look into the box itself. the outer cardboard is just sitting on top and can be pulled off easily. we put it aside and see a small strap, which we can pull up and open the box with it. i must say that feels quite high-quality. and if you sit it front of it, you get a really nice presentation of the product itself. of course we take google home out of the box and put it aside for now, and take a look what else is in the box. beneath the cover we got the usual paperwork.
a quick start guide on top, a short manual for the google assistant with a few voice commands to try out, different designs that you can buy, and of course warranty information. that's all for the paperwork, and we can put it aside since we don't need it anymore. finally we get a power plug of course, which we need to plug i the device in a minute. we close the box for now, put it aside, the google home in the center and the power plug on the other side. if you import the device from the u.s., keep in mind that it is an american plug, so you need an adapter.
but apart from that there shouldn't be a problem since the power plug can handle european power circuits as well. if we take a closer look at the device, we see the two microphones for recording on the top, on the back we have a mute button and a status led, and at the bottom we have the speakers. we can easily twist this and pull it off, to see the three speakers that were put inside. and if we take a look at the very bottom, we can find the port for the power cable. so, the device is plugged in now, is booting and already looking for wifis. i'd say we quickly take a look at the setup process. while the device is booting, i can go to the app already.
i opened the google home app, in which all devices like the chromecast... and google home are managed. already done that. now i can see in the top, that a new device is available. google home something, let's click on 'setup' and go through the steps. found google home, continue... now the devices establish a wifi connection between each other, as you know it from many other smart devices these days. a test sound... i heard it.
then we get a notification, that google home was made for a different country, since it's released in the u.s. only, yet. so there could be problems in other countries, but here in germany, that shouldn't be the case. next up is a selection we google home will be placed, so that google already gets some context for it. in my case this will be the office. afterwards you can decide, if you want to send additional usage information to google or not, whichever you feel comfortable with. now you can select the wifi network, that should be used by google home. the app can read the wifi password from your phone directly, so no need to type it in directly. and now google home tries to connect with the wifi network. ok, that worked, let's move on.
now we get an introduction to the google assistant, and it requires a google account to enable personalized results. this can be imported from my phone as well, that's the nice thing about android. and now i get asked if i want to have personalized results with the note that everybody who is around can invoke google home. so, if you connect your account and it contains you calendar information, then family, friends or whoever asks has suddenly access to these data. so keep that in mind for your case. you can also set the location of the device or skip this, but in my case this is fine. of course you can also connect music services. a couple different ones are supported, namely google play music, youtube music, but also spotify and pandora. in my case i want spotify as a default.
if a service is not connected with your account or google home yet, you can set it up right here in the app, but in my case that's not needed anymore. once more 'continue' and with that the setup is done! ok, let's move on. so as you can see, the main functionality is equal or at least very similar to an amazon echo. however the variety of devices that you can connect with google home is quite small. if we take a look in the app here, we see nest, phillips hue and smartthings. that definitely could be more, at least amazon can do a lot more with the echo already. but i'm sure this will change over time. one more interesting thing: the top here is a touch pad and if you tap on it...
you get a play and pause button that you can use, or even a volume control with different movements. at least the play/pause tap is more convenient than the amazon echo, where you can just talk to it, and not quickly tap to stop, which can be very helpful at times. i would say that's it for this video. a more detailed review or a comparison between google home and the amazon echo will be coming in a few weeks. if you have detailed questions for that, post them in the comments below, and i can answer them in that video. otherwise i would say we see each other in the next video, if you don't want to miss that, click on subscribe up there. you can also watch to more videos to my left and right, over there is the amazon echo one. and yeah, we see each other next time, until then, ciao!
